Sample Letter to Dispute a Mixed File in Your Credit Report

If you need to send a dispute letter to a credit bureau because they have mixed up someone else’s information in your file, use this sample:

[Your complete name] [Report confirmation number, if available] [Identifying information requested by company, typically including:
• Date of birth
• Address
• Telephone number] [Your return address]

[Date] [Address of credit reporting company, select one of three below for each letter you send] [Equifax Information Services, LLC
P.O. Box 740256

Dear [Name of credit reporting company: Equifax or Experian or TransUnion],

I am writing to dispute the following information that appears on my [Equifax or Experian or TransUnion] consumer report.

Account Information: [List the account number and the name of the reporting company here]

This account is not mine. You have inserted someone else’s account information into my file. Please investigate and remove this account.

[Repeat for each account that belongs to someone else. Be sure to only challenge accounts you know are not yours. Never make a false report because federal law bans anyone from making false reports.]

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

Send the letter by certified U.S. mail, return receipt requested. Ask your post office for help if you’re not sure how to do that.
